Ohio's Lake Erie shore has grown grapes for 150 years, mostly Concord and hybrids. Cleveland and Cincinnati home winemakers order California reds each September for the varietal wines local fruit will not produce.
Locally, Ohio plantings run to lake erie riesling, pinot gris, catawba, and concord. That is a different palette from what we grow — our fruit comes off Lodi, Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Sierra Foothills blocks, so you can make a varietally correct Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, or Petite Sirah without waiting on a vineyard that will never ripen it.
