Colorado has a real wine industry on the Western Slope, but spring frost regularly cuts the crop and Front Range winemakers cannot count on it. Three-day transit keeps fresh fruit in play, and altitude has no effect on a sealed lug.
Locally, Colorado plantings run to grand valley and west elks riesling, merlot, and cabernet franc. That is a different palette from what we grow — our fruit comes off Lodi, Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Sierra Foothills blocks, so you can make a varietally correct Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, or Petite Sirah without waiting on a vineyard that will never ripen it.
