Why Alaska winemakers buy California fruit
Alaska has no commercial vinifera growing season, and refrigerated trucking is not an option. Frozen must and juice pails travel best because they arrive as their own cold pack; fresh clusters are viable only on a direct Anchorage flight during harvest.
Locally, Alaska plantings run to none commercially. That is a different palette from what we grow — our fruit comes off Lodi, Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Sierra Foothills blocks, so you can make a varietally correct Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, or Petite Sirah without waiting on a vineyard that will never ripen it.
